Bosnian

The Bosnian language comes from the Slavic group of languages and is written with both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. It is the official language of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Bosnian language and culture have made significant contributions in literature, art and music. The very famous ballad Hasanaginica originating from the Bosnian region has been translated into more than 40 languages.

Significant numbers of Bosnia and Herzegovina-born migrants arrived in Australia in the early 1990s but migration has declined since then. The Census in 2011 recorded approximately 25 000 Bosnia and Herzegovina-born people in Australia, meaning that there are career prospects in interpreting and translating, community welfare or in the diplomatic service for Bosnian-speaking graduates in Australia.

 Bosnian has been taught at School of Languages since 2005.
