Primary Course Statement

Language: Spanish / Level: Years R-6

 

What is this course about?

In this course, students will develop the foundational knowledge and skills to communicate in Spanish about aspects of their lives and immediate world. They learn to notice aspects of Spanish language and culture(s) and relate these to their own; developing their overall literacy and intercultural capability in the process. Students develop awareness of how language and culture shape who we are and how we make meaning across languages and cultures.

 

What will students learn?

Students:
  • develop and apply knowledge of the sounds and forms of Spanish language including pronunciation and accent, vocab categories, punctuation and word order
  • use Spanish to share information and opinions about their immediate world, ideas and interests
  • use Spanish to respond to and create imaginative texts such as stories and songs
  • notice aspects of Spanish language and culture(s), and how these relate to languages and cultures they know
  • learn strategies for planning and thinking about their language learning and being a language learner.

     

    How will students show their learning and find out how they are going?

    Across the year, students will show evidence of their learning through a range of assessment experiences that capture their capabilities to:

    • use Spanish to interact, inform and create texts
    • explain what they know about how Spanish language and culture(s) work, and how this compares to language(s) and culture(s) they know
    • tell others about how they are going in their learning.

    Junior Secondary Course Statement

    Language: Spanish / Level: Years 7-10

    Length: 2 Semesters per year

     

    What is this course about?

    In this course, students will learn to communicate in Spanish, initially using modelled language and over time learning to express their own meanings and respond to more complex texts and contexts.

    Students will also develop their understandings of how meaning works in Spanish, and develop their capability to interact with diverse people, while also reflecting on themselves as intercultural communicators and language learners.

     

    What will students learn?

    Students:
    • develop and apply learnt structures to express ideas, information and perspectives, from simple to more extended texts in Spanish, related to their lifeworlds and that of Spanish-speaking communities
    • learn how to interact and translate meaning in Spanish across a range of purposes and contexts, exchanging and responding to information and ideas, and exploring issues, values and perspectives
    • develop skills in identifying the structures and features of Italian, including aspects such as pronunciation, register, expressive language, and connecting this to their prior learning/known language(s)
    • reflect on how language(s) and culture(s) come together to shape meaning, perspectives and identity
    • develop the capability to think about, plan and explain their learning needs and progress.

     

    How will students show their learning and find out how they are going?

    Across each year level, students will show evidence of their learning through a range of assessment experiences that capture their capabilities to:

    • use written and spoken Spanish to interact, inform, and create texts
    • explain what they know about making meaning in Spanish language and culture(s)
    • express how they are going in their learning.

    SACE Stage 1 Beginners

    Language/Course Level:  SACE Spanish Beginners / Level: Stage 1

    Length: 1 Semester (10 credits)/2 Semesters (20 credits)

    Content:

    This course follows the SACE Interstate Assessed Languages Beginners Level Subject Outline.

    The content is organised around three interconnected prescribed themes:

    • Relationships
    • Lifestyles
    • Experiences

    Each theme includes prescribed topics and suggested sub-topics that shape the course content.

    The themes are also explored through two perspectives:

    • ‘The personal world’ – express and share ideas about their own activities and those of others relating to daily life and transactions
    • ‘The Spanish-speaking Communities’ – enquire about and express ideas in Spanish, and understand values, attitudes, and practices in communities where Spanish is used.

    Students develop and apply their linguistic and intercultural knowledge, understanding, and skills to:

    • interact with others in Spanish in interpersonal situations
    • create texts in Spanish for specific audiences, purposes, and contexts
    • analyse texts that are in Spanish to interpret meaning.

     

    Assessment:

    Students undertake a series of assessments each semester, following the SACE Assessment types:

    School Assessment (100%)

    In each semester, students undertake 4-5 tasks from the following assessment types, with each worth at least 20%:

    Assessment Type 1: Interaction

    Assessment Type 2: Text production

    Assessment Type 3: Text analysis

     Students are assessed according to the SACE Performance Standards in the Subject Outline.

    SACE Stage 2 Beginners

    Language/Course Level:  SACE Spanish Beginners / Level: Stage 2

    Length: 2 Semesters (20 credits)

    Prerequisite: Stage 1 Spanish Beginners

    Content:

    Assessment Type 1: interaction (30%)

    Assessment Type 2: text production (20%)

    Assessment Type 3: text analysis (20%)

    Assessment Type 4: Examination

    Oral (Presentation and Discussion; Conversation)

    Written (Listening; Reading; Writing)

     Students are assessed according to the SACE Performance Standards in the Subject Outline.

    Year 11 & 12 Language Ab Initio

    Language/Course Level: IB Spanish ab Initio / Level: Year 11 and 12

    Length: 2 years

    Preferred background/Prerequisite: No prior study of the language

    Content:

    This course follows the IB Spanish ab Initio Subject Guide.

    The content is organised around five prescribed themes:

    • identities
    • experiences
    • human ingenuity
    • social organization
    • sharing the planet.

    Each theme includes four prescribed topics that shape the course content.

    Students will develop their receptive and productive language skills and be assessed in relation to their capability to:

    • Communicate clearly and effectively in a range of contexts and for a variety of purposes
    • Understand and use language appropriate to a range of interpersonal and/or intercultural contexts and audiences
    • Understand and use language to express and respond to a range of ideas with fluency and accuracy
    • Identify, organize and present ideas on a range of topics
    • Understand, analyse and reflect upon a range of written, audio, visual and audio-visual texts
    • Demonstrate international mindedness.

     

    Assessment:

    Students undertake the following assessments across the course:

    Internal Assessment (25%) External Assessment (75%)
    Conversation with teacher based on visual stimulus (this component is externally moderated)

    Paper 1: Two written tasks (25%)

    Paper 2: Listening; Reading (50%)

    Students are assessed according to the IB Assessment Criteria and Performance Mark Schemes.

    Year 11 & 12 Language B

    Language/Course Level: IB Spanish Language B

    This course can be taken at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL).

    Level: Year 11 and 12 / Length: 2 years

    Preferred background/Prerequisite: These courses are for students who have previous experience of the language such as completed middle school studies or equivalent, in Spanish.

    Content:

    This course follows the IB Spanish Language B Subject Guide.

    The content is organised around five prescribed themes:

    • identities
    • experiences
    • human ingenuity
    • social organization
    • sharing the planet.

    Each theme is explored through recommended topics and possible questions.

    Students will develop their receptive and productive language skills and be assessed in relation to their capability to:

    • Communicate clearly and effectively in a range of contexts and for a variety of purposes
    • Understand and use language appropriate to a range of interpersonal and/or intercultural contexts and audiences
    • Understand and use language to express and respond to a range of ideas with fluency and accuracy
    • Identify, organize and present ideas on a range of topics
    • Understand, analyse and reflect upon a range of written, audio, visual and audio-visual texts
    • Demonstrate international mindedness.

    • The Individual
    • The Spanish-Speaking Communities
    • The Changing World.

    Each theme includes prescribed topics and suggested sub-topics that shape the course content. *

    Students will learn to:

    • use Spanish to interact with others to exchange information, ideas, opinions, and experiences
    • create texts in Spanish to express information, feelings, ideas, and opinions
    • analyse texts that are in Spanish to interpret meaning
    • examine relationships between language, culture, and identity, and reflect on the ways in which culture influences communication.

     

    Assessment:

    Students undertake a series of assessments each semester, following the SACE Assessment types:

    School Assessment (100%)

    In each semester, students undertake 5 tasks from the following assessment types, with each worth at least 20%:

    Assessment Type 1: Interaction

    Assessment Type 2: Text Production

    Assessment Type 3: Text Analysis

    Assessment Type 4: Investigation

    SACE Stage 2 Continuers

    This course follows the SACE Stage 2 Locally Assessed Spanish Continuers Subject Outline.

    The content is organised around three prescribed themes:

    • The Spanish-Speaking Communities
    • The Changing World.

    Students will learn to:

    • interact with others to exchange information, ideas, opinions, and experiences in Spanish
    • create texts in Spanish to express information, feelings, ideas, and opinions
    • analyse texts that are in Spanish to interpret meaning
